93rd Newcastle Scout Group

The 93rd Newcastle Scout Group are from the Walkergate area of Newcastle Upon Tyne, and consist of Beavers (aged 6-8yrs), Cubs (aged 8-10yrs), Scouts (aged 10-14) and finally Explorer Scouts and Young Leaders (aged 14 plus). The four sections are supported by a strong leadership team of volunteers who also offer time to work at the campsite as well as the groups own allotment in Walker.

Our group is very much a community within a community with all of our sections actively participating in activities within the groups own infrastructure plus attending events with the wider scouting community.

Our young people thrive in the safe surroundings of our Walkergate based headquarters, along with our Allotment and Broadwood Scout Campsite. our programs and outdoor adventures give our young people the opportunity and freedom to explore a world beyond the boundaries of everyday life. It presents them with chances to try new things, provide service to others, build self-confidence and develop leadership skills.

In September 2017 the 93rd City of Newcastle Scout Group were offered the lease for the 13 acre woodland site which incorporates a 3.8 acre camping field, alongside the River Font.

The Campsite

The area was used as a Scout Campsite until the early 1980’s and the land remained untouched since. Over the next 2 years we repaired the access road, removed the 7ft weed that had taken over the main camping field, and created drainage ditches to protect the field from flooding.

During the summer 2019 we installed a fresh water pipe, and work continued to cut back overgrown vegetation. After fundraising we purchased a ride on lawn mower, and then later a steel container which was transported onto the site by a local farmer. Other donations include two new life rings to place along the banks of the river, a petrol bush cutter and even a trailer to attach to the ride on mower.

We are currently raising funds to install a compost toilet block which will allow our members to visit the site on a frequent basis to help with ongoing work, and to extend their camping skills.

Once the toilet facilities are in place we will open the site for hire which will be ideal for Scout or Guide groups, plus other youth organisations and Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions.
